Tourism

In the vicinity of our exceptional guest house the Tourist office has plotted some scenic routes that you can explore by car, by bicycle or walking. Specially recommended is the “Castle route”. Furthermore “de Vreeburgh” is situated in the vicinity of the "Noabers-path", very well-known by walkers.

Haaksbergen is well-known for its unspoilt scenery (among other things the Haaksbergse and the Buurserveen), the wide moors, where you can meet the sheep flock. Furthermore Haaksbergen has a web of bicycle paths that are maintained by volunteers every year.

Also sport-loving guests can come into one’s own. In the vicinity you can rent canoes and devoted golfers can find beautiful courses in Winterswijk and Haaksbergen.

Of course we can provide rent bicycles for you. When you notify us in time, your bicycle will be available at your arrival.

What to think for instance of a long Easter weekend? Then you can get introduced to various folkloristic customs in “de Achterhoek” and Twente: the lighting of the  “Poasboakes” (Easter bonfires) and the “Vlöggel’n” with the “Poaskeerls” in picturesque Ootmarsum (about 30 minutes drive from “de Vreeburgh”).

In the summer months you can make a trip with the old steam train from Haaksbergen to Boekelo and in Delden a visit to the salt museum is really worth while.

In Rekken as well as in Eibergen you can find open-air swimming pools and in Haaksbergen a subtropical swimming pool.

In Bredervoort (about 15 minutes drive) you can go boating by gondola through the village in the summer months. Also this village is well-known for its bookshops with an enormous collection of second-hand and antiquarian books.

Just over the border, in the German Zwillbrock, there is a bird sanctuary, where you can see flamingos in the summer time.  Just a little further in Germany you can find the “Vredeszaal” (Peace room) of Münster, where in 1648 the Peace of Münster was signed, which ended the 80-years’ War. Or visit some time “Schloss Bentheim”, just over the German border near Denekamp. If you want to visit more in Germany, the cities Osnabrück and Bremen are on a 2 hours drive from “de Vreeburgh”.

For the hikers among you: every year in September the “Kennedy march” is organized. This is a marathon march over a distance of 42 or 80 km. You can walk this march during day and night time. More information: http://www.haaksbergen-wandel.nl

In short, on one kilometre from the German border and a half hour drive from the bubbling centre of Twente you can find a hospitable accommodation in a surprising part of the Netherlands surely worth visiting.
